A GUIDE TO THE PITCHER PLANTS OF SABAH
Natural History Publications Borneo, Sdn. Bhd., Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, 2001. ISBN 983-8120-57-X. In English. Stapled softcover. iv+41 pages, 59 colour photos, 2 colour maps, 7 b/w drawings, 3 b/w illustrations. The author says: "Unlike my two other books, this one is not aimed at scientists. It is just a general guide to the pitcher plants of Sabah which, hopefully, will be of interest to people who would like to know more about pitcher plants, but who do not wish to purchase a monograph on them! The primary market is international and regional visitors to Mount Kinabalu, but it is also hoped that it will appeal to carnivorous plant enthusiasts as well." Anyway, this booklet is a beauty! There is a general introduction to the state of Sabah and Nepenthes, plus short passages (and lots of photos!) of the different species. A few plates from the author's other texts have also been incorporated. In all, 20 species are illustrated and discussed, along with several natural hybrids.

Ten Speed Press, Berkeley, CA, USA, 1998. ISBN 0-89815-915-6. In English. Paperback. 336 pages, 225 colour photos. From the contents: after the introduction to carnivorous plants (covering their history in horticulture, why they are carnivorous etc.), the book is divided into three parts - Part I is on the basics of cultivation, covering soils, pottery, photoperiod, grow lights and things like that; Part II reviews where you can grow carnivorous plants, such as greenhouses, terrariums, windowsills, outdoors and so on; Part III reviews all genera of CP and their specific cultivation requirements rather extensively. An appendix covering resources, laws, tissue culture, etc. Bibliography and index. It seems to be a great book for any CPer.

Darwin, Charles:
INSECTIVOROUS PLANTS
John Murray, London, England, 1875. 1. edition. In English. Hardcover. X+462 pages, 30 b/w drawings. This enjoyable book gave the carnivorous nature of plants scientific reputation. This was not a less revolutionary book than the one he became famous for, but, as Darwin said, the little plant with sticky leaves (D.rotundifolia) was much dearer than the whole development of species for him. So he dedicated a major part of this book to this sundew and described many still interesting experiments with which he proved carnivorous nature of plants. However, most of the other CP genera are discussed, too. Includes references and index. Fun reading, a historical value. Highly recommended especially to teachers and other people who want to give practical introductions in the field of CP and science. Juniper et al. in their books write that Darwin and Lloyd should be in a library of every CP botanically founded enthusiast.

D. Appleton & Co., New York, NY, USA, 1900. Reprint of the revised 2. edition. In English. Hardcover. XIV+376 pages, 30 b/w drawings. This edition was revised by Sir Francis Darwin [1848-1945], Charles' son. |

CARNIFLORA -- VLEESETENDE PLANTEN: WERKING, SOORTEN, VERZORGING
(Carniflora -- Carnivorous Plants: trapping methods, species, culture) Uitgeverij Palmblad, Ilpendam, Netherlands, 2002. ISBN 90-8072-161-1. In English and Dutch. Stapled softcover. 1+48+1 pages, 88 colour photos. The magazine is a must for every carnivorous plant enthusiast -- no matter whether he is beginner or advanced. The author managed to compile a real nice mag by writing an interesting text and showing a good number of photos (many of these were contributed by well-known specialists of the CP scene like Thomas Carow, Barry Meyers-Rice, Hans Luhrs, Bruce Salmon and Art Vogel, others were done by the Dutch CP nursery Carni Flora). The main target certainly are beginners of the hobby as you find a complete overview of the field. But the nice photos and the rather low price are surely also inviting pros to add this nice piece to their collection. The decision to work with a professional publisher in the working field "nature" (Palmblad, Dutch publisher of a magazines about exotic animals and plants) was a wise one. "Carniflora" was produced in very good quality -- this means both the paper quality and the photo reproduction. The text is fully bilingual. It runs in an English and a Dutch column through each page. Only the photo captions -- if they give anything else than the Latin plant name -- are in Dutch only. But that's no big problem, the Dutch words are easy to guess.

All carnivorous plants introduced and cultivated in Japan (203 species) are shown in color photos including those of their habitats, close-ups of flowers and traps. The text (84 p.) contains information on cultivation of each genus. [J.Schlauer (Nov. 1996)]: 'Several species of cps are featured here with colour photographs for the first time, and most (all?) pictures are originals which were not published previously. The value of the book therefore rivals that of 'The Carnivorous Plants of the World in Colour' by M. & K. Kondo in many respects.' Mistakes: p.4. P.hemiepiphytica for P. colimensis, p.23 U.graminifolia for U.reticulata, p.55 D.kaieteurensis for D.arenicola, p.? D.collinsiae for D.burkeana, p.67 D.petiolaris 'Kununurra' is now named D.ordensis, p.? probably D.hirticalyx for D.sessilifolia. Review CPN 26(1), 1997, p.16-17 by Jan Schlauer.

PLANTES CARNIVORES - COMMENT LES CULTIVER FACILEMENT
(Carnivorous Plants - a guide on simple culture) Eugen Ulmer, Paris, 2000. ISBN 2-8413-8134-X. In French. Paperback. 96 pages, 80 colour photos, 30 colour drawings. It is a great little book. It's a handbook format and nearly 100 pages long, [mainly] a guide to growing CP. Everything is covered including soils, humidity, light, pests, etc. It really is very comprehensive for such a small book. I guess it will mainly appeal to beginners to use as a guide, but those same beginners will find it useful to know in advance the sort of plants they should consider suitable when more experienced or expert. Steiner, Hugo:
BORNEO: ITS MOUNTAINS AND LOWLANDS WITH THEIR PITCHER PLANTS - TREKKING FROM 1992 TO 2002
Toihaan Publishing Company, Sdn. Bhd., Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, 2002. ISBN 983-404-211-6. In English. Hardcover. viii+136 pages. Impressed by the beauty and elegance of the pitcher plants of the family Nepenthaceae, the author and his wife made annual trips for 12 years to Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysian states on the island of Borneo, to study and photograph the numerous endemic pitcher plants in their natural, frequently remote, habitats. They were fascinated by the biological singularity of the nutrition, survival and propa- gation cycle of these plants, and particularly by their carnivorous technique and exodigestion of proteins. The author also became increasingly attracted by the beauty of these plants' homelands, the peaks, the highlands and lowlands of Borneo, which he visited with expert guides on many expeditions. In this book the pitchers (and plants) of all Nepenthes species of Sabah and Sarawak, and some endemic Kalimantan species, are illus- trated. Their particularities, including many natural hybrids, are described. The threats to these wonderful tropical plants as well as possible ways of ensuring their survival in their original habitat are also discussed. The book will interest both scientists and naturalists as it endea- vours to give a simple approach to this family of plants from the tropical forests of Borneo. About the author: Hugo Steiner is a Swiss citizen who graduated from the University of Zurich as a medical doctor specialising in endocrinology. He worked for several years as the leader of a research group in experimental endocrinology for Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. in Basel, Switzerland. He has also done research work in Sweden, Italy, France and Germany. In 1965, Dr. Steiner served as team leader of a International Red Cross mission in North Yemen. From 1976 to 1998 he had a private medical practice, specialising in endocrinology and diabetes, in Basel. Between 1991 and 2002 Dr. Steiner and his wife spent a month each year in Borneo, visiting the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. They also made frequent visits to Morocco and Tunisia, which resulted in a book on Roman cities in Northern Africa and another about the Roman capital of Volubilis in central Morocco.

Series: Weird and wacky science
Enslow, Springfield, N.J., USA, 1996. ISBN 0-89490-617-8. In English. Hardcover. 48 pages, colour and b/w drawings. [Review from The Horn Book, Inc.]: Plants that eat animals may seem like freaks of nature, but one of the strengths of this book is that it explains how environmental conditions and competition for resources may have led these plants to evolve. The text and B&W and color photographs highlight the amazing diversity of carnivorous plants. Comments on the possibility of plants devouring humans are sensationalized. Provides information about such predatory animals and plants as tigers, octopuses, ladybugs, and pitcher plants. [Review from The Horn Book, Inc.]: The fascinating content and easy language of two nature books compensate for the amateurish illustrations. Difficult words are clearly defined, and pronunciation guides are included. Environmental concerns are discussed, and helpful organizations -- to which part of each book's cost is donated -- are listed at the end. Small but colorful photographs enhance the series.

INSECTES ET PLANTES. EVOLUTION PARALLÈLE ET ADAPTATIONS
(Insects and Plants : Parallel Evolution and Adaptations) Société Linnéenne de Lyon, Lyon, France, 1983. ?ISBN. 1. edition. In French. Paperback. 148 pages, 28 drawings. Insects and plants, whether or not they coevolved, have intimate interrelationships. This book concisely yet thoroughly describes these phenomena. In one chapter the salient facts known about carnivorous plants are described. In another, ant and plant relationships are summarized as an introduction to this vast subject. Pollination, of great interest to agriculturists and horticulturists, is briefly explained without the complexities detailed in the massive literature on this topic. Many other subjects are discussed, such as the memory of adult butterflies, which enables them to return to their host plants in the case of the polyphagous species. The book is seeded with such thought-provoking discussions as prostitution among the orchids and botanical indigestion in some plants.

BIOLOGY OF SPHAGNUM
Series: Advances in Bryology Vol. 5
E. Schweizerbart'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung (A Publication of the International Association of Bryologists), Stuttgart, 1993. ISBN 3-443-52003-0. In English. Hardcover. viii+338 pages. The Sphagnum mosses receive recognition for the central role they play in the ecology of mire wetland ecosystems and for their high monetary value as both a major constituent of commercially harvested peat and a source of raw material for several products. The International Association of Bryologists and the British Bryological Society sponsered an international symposium on research involving Sphagnum. A part of the contributed papers was suited to the review format of the Advances in Bryology. These papers are status reports on research into various aspects of the biology of Sphagnum and the role of peat mosses in extant ecosystems. From the papers can be gleaned an understanding both of the problems that remain and what has been learned about the peat mosses in recent decades.
